Abstract: This doctoral dissertation aims to study theoretically and explore experimentally the possibilities of encouraging and fostering creativity in lower grades of primary school by using the method of open-ended approach. In order to get a comprehensive view of the framework of possibilities for nurturing mathematical creativity, the first part of the dissertation deals with theoretical considerations of concepts, comprehension of general and mathematical creativity, different ways of fostering creativity, and the concept of teaching by open-ended approach and by using open-ended and closed problems. After reviewing previous studies and research we have created a model of experimental programme of teaching by open-ended approach. In the second part of the dissertation evaluation of theoretical background is presented. Furthermore, through an experiment we examine the influence of the created model on the level of creative thinking and abilities of students in lower grades of elementary school and also the effects of the model on mathematical knowledge. The dissertation general hypothesis that the use of a teaching model based on an open-ended approach will significantly increase the level of creative abilities of students and educational effects, is confirmed with the method of pedagogical experiment with parallel groups. The research was conducted during the second semester of 2009/2010 academic year. The research involved 162 third grade students of three elementary schools in Jagodina, 82 of whom were taught by the method of open-ended approach (experimental group), using ready-made materials of the experimental programme, while 80 were taught in the traditional way (control group). The groups were unified by gender, achievement in mathematics at the end of the first semester of third grade, by the parents’ educational background, by the level of mathematical knowledge and by the level of general and mathematical creativity. Subsidiary methods of research are methods of theoretical analysis, descriptive method and modelling. The concrete result of the research is that students in the experimental group show, on average, better results than the control group in terms of mathematical knowledge, and also higher level of general and mathematical creativity. In addition, all specific research hypotheses related to the experimental group have been confirmed: there is no relationship between students achievement and level of general and mathematical creativity with gender; the experimental programme influences significantly the interests and motivation of students for the subject.

Apstrakt: Tema doktorske disertacije je teorijsko proučavanje i eksperimentalno istraživanje mogućnosti razvijanja kreativnosti u početnoj nastavi matematike metodom otvorenog pristupa. U cilju sagledavanja sveobuhvatnog okvira mogućnosti razvijanja matematičke kreativnosti prvi deo disertacije bazira se na teorijskim razmatranjima o pojmu, shvatanjima kreativnosti uopšte i u matematici, o načinima podsticanja kreativnosti, o koncepciji nastave zasnovane na korišćenju metode otvorenog pristupa i problemima otvorenog i zatvorenog tipa. Na osnovu teorijskog sagledavanja dosadašnjih proučavanja i istraživanja izrađen je model eksperimentalnog programa nastave zasnovane na metodi otvorenog pristupa. U drugom delu disertacije izvršena je evaluacija datih teorijskih razmatranja. Odnosno, eksperimentalnim putem ispitivan je uticaj stvorenog modela eksperimentalnog programa na povećanje nivoa razvijenosti kreativnog mišljenja i sposobnosti učenika mlađeg školskog uzrasta i povećanje obrazovnih efekata. Opšta hipoteza, da će primena modela nastave matematike zasnovanog na metodi otvorenog pristupa značajno doprineti povećanju nivoa razvijenosti kreativnih sposobnosti učenika, kao i povećanju vaspitno–obrazovnih efekata, potvrđena je metodom pedagoškom eksperimenta sa paralelnim grupama. Istraživanje je sprovedeno tokom drugog polugođa školske 2009/2010. godine. Obuhvaćena su 162 učenika trećeg razreda tri osnovne škole opštine Jagodina. Od ukupnog broja učenika 82 učenika su radila primenom modela eksperimentalnog programa (eksperimentalna grupa), dok je 80 učenika radilo na tradicionalan način (kontrolna grupa). Grupe su ujednačene po polu, po uspehu iz matematike na kraju prvog polugođa trećeg razreda, po stručnoj spremi roditelja, po opštim intelektualnim sposobnostima, po nivou matematičkih znanja i po nivou razvijenosti opšte i matematičke kreativnosti. U radu su korišćene i pomoćne metode: metoda teorijske analize, deskriptivna metoda i modelovanje.
