Opis (srp)

U disertaciji Male klauze u engleskom i srpskom jeziku se metodom kontrastivne analize utvrđuju sintaksičke i semantičke karakteristike bezglagolskih malih klauza u engleskom i srpskom jeziku.

Opis (eng)

The dissertation Small clauses in the English and Serbian language employs the means of contrastive analysis to determine syntactic and semantic characteristics of non-verbal small clauses in the language systems of English and Serbian. The term small clause is used to represent a copular predication which is not explicated and which holds between two non-verbal elements (NP2 XP) in the complex-transitive sentence pattern, NP1 VP NP2 XP. The dissertation is based on the structural-descriptive linguistic model and relies on tools of both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The primary goal is to determine similarities and differences between non-verbal small clauses in English and Serbian, but also to define their place in the syntactic systems of the two languages. The corpus consists of literary work published in contemporary English and Serbian, and its translation. The first part of the analysis aims to determine syntactic and semantic characteristics of adjunct and complement types of small clauses in English and Serbian. The second part is based on the bidirectional analysis of translation equivalents and completes the previous segment by showing the real level of correspondence between the two languages when they interact. The dissertation deals with the adjunct depictive small clause, adjunct resultative small clause and complement small clause which relates to both semantic possibilities. Based on the analysis of the collected data, we have concluded that adjunct depictives are quantitatively, qualitatively and functionally almost equivalent. Adjunct resultative small clause is a productive type in English, whereas the sentence pattern is not as frequent in Serbian. However, we have noted constructional equivalence when the XP element is represented by a prepositional phrase, and rarely by adjectival phrase. Small clauses which complement semi-copular verbs have the same syntactic and semantic properties in both languages, but despite that a relatively small percentage of translation equivalence in the resultative subtype has been noted. Having synthesized the previous research, we have come to the conclusion that non-verbal small clauses have complementary distribution whithout clear boundaries, and thus constitute a micro-system of language units which make a simple sentence informationally complex.
