U disertaciji Konstituisanje postapokaliptične fikcije u prozi Kormaka Makartija i Margaret Atvud nastojaćemo da korišćenjem komparativne, sociološke, semiološke i metode dekonstrukcije doprinesemo razumevanju unikatnog književnog fenomena 21. veka, kanonizaciji postapokaliptične fikcije pojavom Makartijevog romanaPut i trilogije LudAdam Margaret Atvud. Koristićemo se tekstovima Slavoja Žižeka, Žana Bodrijara, Mišela Fukoa, Žaka Deride, Deleza i Gatarija, Timotija Mortona, Erika vSvenhdaua, Rozi Brajdoti i drugih teoretičara postapokalipse, kulture, ekologije i posthumanizma.

The PhD dissertation named Constituting Postapocalyptic Fiction in The Prose of Cormac McCarthy and Margaret Atwood, will endeavor to contribute to understanding of a unique literary phenomenon of the 21st century: the canonization of post-apocalyptic fiction in McCarthy’s novel The Road and in Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy. The thesis will employ several approaches to analyze postapocalyptic prose: comparative, semiotic, deconstruction and sociological approach, with the emphasis on neo-Marxist cultural criticism.By examining the novels of the aforementioned authors through the lens of genre theory and Northrop Fry’s notion of literary mode, the thesis will highlight the ways in which postapocalyptic fiction is constituted as academically recognized literature. Although postapocalyptic as a cultural phenomenon in the novels of McCarthy and Atwood has been the subject of extensive literary research, the contribution of this PhD thesis lies in understanding post-apocalyptic fiction in the context of canonical literature and the entry of post-apocalypse into the Western canon. Furthermore, the thesis will examine the legitimacy of subversive and cultural significance of postapocalyptic fiction as another feature of canonical literature. The thesis will seek to establish the connections that post-apocalyptic fiction establishes with the literary classics to which it relates. Thus, the text will focus on the connection with the classics such as Plato, Dante, Milton, Merry Shelley, Swift, Wells, Huxley, Becket, and others. One of the premises for entering the canon is the way in which, like its literary predecessors, postapocalyptic mainstream literature is based on the matrices of religion, myth and philosophy. Postapocalyptic fiction of the mainstream is inseparable from its biblical model which transforms in the form of an anti-apocalypse, a space of loss of meaning, significance, language, and referents. This text will also deal with the post-apocalyptic novel in the context of cultural studies, by trying to define the factors of social crises through the modality of subversive, engaged prose. The author will analyze the conventions of post-apocalyptic fiction employed, transformed and/or rejected by both McCarthy and Atwood, as well as ideological correlations of the post-apocalyptic paradigm in the face of the recent ecological turn in contemporary discourse. The thesis will examine the ways in ecology, nature, wilderness, overpopulation, consumerism, climate change, and other such categories can be observed from the standpoint of cultural criticism; in such process, different ideological positions are at play, and they seem to define post-apocalyptic prose as subversive, and at the same time, as a product of the centers of power, in a play in which this fiction simultaneously destabilize and sustain the ruling political-economic paradigm. Hence, the thesis will employ texts of Slavoj Žižek, Jean Baudrillard, Deleuze and Guattari, Michael Foucault, Timothy Morton, Erik Swyngedouw, Rosi Braidotti, and other theorists of postapocalypse, cultural studies, ecocricitism, and posthumanism. viiThe contribution of this thesis relies upon the study of post-apocalyptic literature, which has not been the subject of doctoral dissertations in Serbian literary space; moreover, the framework of postapocalypse in the literary canon used in this thesis is an original contribution to the dissertations available in an international repository. At the same time, this thesis contributes to the entry of ecocriticism into literary studies in Serbian language, by examining most contemporary ecocritical theories, as well as in the review of new fields of literary studies such as climate fiction and oil-fiction, also called petrotexts.
